Our clients include Fortune 500 corporations, closely held companies, and start-up ventures. We have particular experience in complex business transactions, including stock and asset transactions, corporate mergers, the creation of joint ventures, like-kind exchange transactions, the tax treatment of real estate investment trusts, and low-income housing credit transactions.

Tax-Exempt Organizations

Venable attorneys deliver timely, cost-effective service to trade and professional associations, charitable foundations, and other nonprofit clients. We also design plans for reducing tax burdens while ensuring that an organization’s resources are put to their best use.

Tax Controversies and Litigation

We represent organizations and individuals at every stage of resolving disputes with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)—from meetings with IRS examiners to tax appeals and, when necessary, tax litigation. Many members of our team have worked within the IRS and know its processes intimately.

State and Local Tax

Venable attorneys have extensive experience with a broad range of state and local tax (SALT) planning and controversy matters, including income, franchise, sales and use, transfer and recordation, and property taxes. We represent clients in administrative controversies and tax-related litigation, ranging from informal discussions with tax administrators to handling appellate litigation.
